Stalwarts Head to Head: Aconite & Belladonna

Anjum Rahmatulla

Aconite and Belladonna – 2 well known stalwarts of homeopathic remedies that I learned about very early on when I was a student of homeopathy.

I still am, by the way!!! A student, of learning.

You never ever stop learning homeopathy.

But it can be quite difficult to differentiate between them for first aid/home prescribing/acute purposes, and especially if you are a beginner.

So here is a comparison of what to look out for when treating an acute problem.

What do they have in common?

What is different?

I hope it will help YOU to differentiate between them so you can be more accurate in your prescribing.

COMMONALITIES

  • Sudden onset of symptoms: For example, a fever which comes on very fast, out of nowhere.

  • Symptoms brought on by getting chilled/cold. (Aconite can also have complaints brought on by hot weather.) Aconite by exposure to cold, dry air, Belladonna from uncovering head or after a hair-cut.

  • Alternating chills and burning hot

DIFFERENCES

  • Aconite is thirsty, Belladonna is thirstless.

  • Aconite is fearful, distressed and anguished; Belladonna is agitated, restless

  • Aconite is worse at night, usually before midnight; Belladonna is worse 3am and/or 3pm.

  • Aconite has more diffused inflammation; Belladonna tends to inflammation in one part of the body eg the head, face and eyes which will be red, flushed.

  • In a fever, Belladonna will have radiating heat and the hands and feet will be cold The tongue will be red with white dots (strawberry tongue). Eyes wild and staring. Aconite will have one cheek red and the other pale.

  • Aconite will be restless and very anxious. Belladonna is prone to delirium, with violence such as hitting, kicking, biting.

There is so much more to both these remedies, and this blog is a small step in differentiating between Aconite and Belladonna. I hope you find it useful.
